Gun Control: How Do We Get Out of This Mess? – Deep Dive
At this point, if you haven’t been assaulted with arguments from both the left and right concerning gun control, you probably aren’t paying attention. Every few months, another mass shooting occurs and the same exact arguments are brought up over and over again. The right claims that gun control doesn’t work, refusing to take in evidence to the contrary. The left claims that the NRA has bought the US Congress, ignoring the fact that much of the US population doesn’t agree with their take on guns.
To make matters worse, politicians and mainstream news media use these tragic events to score political points and profits. The use an event such as the Parkland High School shooting to separate themselves from their opposition and demonize whatever the opposite side of the debate is. Make no mistake, this is abhorrent. Standing on the graves of children to make arguments for and against gun control while having no intentions of making any reasonable change to gun laws is morally bankrupt. Unfortunately, that seems to be the interest of the leaders screaming into megaphones. Secure Votes. Do nothing.
However, what is certain is the overwhelming tragedy of young people being annihilated in schools. This is not an event that should take place. Ever.
In that vein, let’s take a deep dive into the arguments for and against gun control. As always, instead of pushing ideological talking points, I’d like to take a more nuanced look at the popular arguments regarding gun control from an empirical perspective. Some arguments for or against gun control are purely ideological or emotional in nature and don’t necessarily have a statistical basis. For these types of arguments, we’ll be talking about the logic behind the ideological points instead of attacking them with statistics.
Let’s Dive In.
